Diagnosis of a Colles Fracture

Colles fracture was classically described by colles as “a fracture that takes place at about an inch and a half above the carpal extremity of radius and the corpus and the metacarpus appears to be thrown back”.

Diagnosis of colles fracture depends on the history and visual examination that will show a dorsal or posterior tilt of the radius. The diagnosis can be aided by undertaking radiograph that further helps the physician to appreciate certain other changes such as radial shortening, loss of ulnar inclination, comminution at the fracture site and associated fracture of the ulnar styloid process, if present. Once diagnosed, colles fracture has several alternatives for treatment depending on the degree or severity of the fracture. Although there is availability of treatment, yet it should be made sure that such fractures do not take place itself which is done by eating a healthy, balanced diet with adequate amounts of calcium so that the threshold to bear pressure by the bones is increased and by using protective equipments during high-risk sports.
